Take Off

Experimental Video, 2009

In the beginning of 2009 I found myself traveling extensively to many areas of the country. I am in awe of the ability of planes to travel the distances they do with such relative ease every day. Take Off is a piece that highlights the portion of the flight that causes me the most wonder. I am always amazed at the capacity of a large jumbo jet to lift off from the ground.

I decided to experiment with the time-based linearity of the images, which document the trails of water droplets on my window as the plane accelerated during takeoff. I brought the images into Processing, a programming language and environment used to generate quick sketches in code. I randomized the display of images to upset the progression and extend the moment of take-off in an infinite but random loop. This prolongs the feeling of anticipation (and anxiety) that pervades as you sit back in your seat and feel the plane take flight.
